St. Thomas Suppresses Freedom of Speech

Quoting an online article from WCCO news:

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu won’t be speaking at the University of St. Thomas in April because school officials are worried his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would offend the Jewish community, a school official said.

“He (Tutu) has been critical of Israel and Israeli policy regarding the Palestinians, so we talked with people in the Jewish community and they said they believed it would be hurtful to the Jewish community, because of things he’s said,” Hennes said.

He is not allowed to speak because he is critical of a foreign country’s policy. This is one of the most horrifying acts of censorship and oppressions of freedom of speech I have ever heard about in an Amerian univesity. St. Thomas is not allowing intellectual and acedemic disscussion within its walls. If discourse of conflicting opinions is not allowed in universities and colleges, then where?? In our media? Where headline news often is about Paris Hilton or Anna Nicole Smith?

What a horrible decision.
