Why You Shouldn’t Hate Me Because I’m Mormon (Or, Romney’s Latest Speech Topic)

*UPDATE*: Watch Romney’s speech here. An interesting highlight from the vocally Mormon candidate: “No candidate should become the spokesman for his faith. For if he becomes President he will need the prayers of the people of all faiths.”

Look for details on an upcoming Mitt Romney speech that will directly address his Mormon faith and how it will play out in the White House. This Thursday, Romney will give his “Faith in America” speech and take questions about the effect of his religion on his politics.

He hopes to win over wary evangelicals who are moving their support to the former Baptist minister, Mike Huckabee. According to polls, a quarter of Republicans are less likely to support a Mormon candidate, and evangelicals even less likely, as the religion is sometimes perceived as “cult-like.”

Stay tuned for reactions to the speech, which is similar to John F. Kennedy’s defense of his Catholicism during his 1960 presidential campaign. Looks like Mormonism is the new Catholicism in politics…
