Recount.

Dennis Kucinich has said he favors a recount of the Democratic primary results in New Hampshire. Recounts can be done for a $2,000 fee and Kucinich officials have said they have sent in the fee. Kucinich cited reports showing the disparity between hand counted and machine results in which Obama won by 4% in hand counted results and Clinton won by 5% in machine counted results. A 9% swing between the two methods is frightening to say the least. Also, with all the polls directly beforehand highly favoring Obama, the sudden and drastic swing towards Clinton has also been questioned. The potential problem is with the Diebold election machines which are well-known for being relatively easy to hack, in less than 10 minutes in some cases. On the Republican side, in one precinct there were zero votes for Ron Paul, but voters came forward saying they had voted for Paul in the primaries. Apparently there was a “human error” which left 31 votes for Paul off the tally sheet. Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan said he has received numerous calls questioning the results, but is confident that they are accurate because:

“I think people from out of state don’t completely understand how our process works and they compare it to the system that might exist in Florida or Ohio, where they have had serious problems. Perhaps the best thing that could happen for us is to have a recount to show the people that … the votes that were cast on election day were accurately reflected in the results. And I have every confidence that will be the case.”

Yes, perhaps. Apparently the results can be checked against paper ballots and the voting machines aren’t linked, preventing widespread tampering. While we here at Civic Alert like to stick to “official” sources, let’s just pretend you got this link from someone else, they say it much better, and with far more depth than I can; if you have any concern about this issue, I strongly recommend you read it.

Currently none of the major news outlets are covering this story, so if you want to bring this story to the attention of the nation I recommend you submit the story to CNN and e-mail MSNBC at letters@msnbc.com.

  1. I’m really shocked at how much of a sketchy business this all is. Sure, I’ve always thought something was a little off kilter to say the least, but dang, this is just ridiculous.

Also, I love the small tongue-in-cheek picture captions. They make every visit to the blog enjoyable even more so.
