Fidel Castro Resigns as President of Cuba

Fidel Castro, everybody’s favorite Cuban president/dictator/honeybuns, announced his retirement on Wednesday. Castro, who overthrew the corrupted dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista at age 32, has served as president of Cuba for 49 years. His resignation doesn’t really come as a surprise. He “temporarily” handed over power to his younger brother Raul after intestinal surgery in 2006. Castro announced he will not accept another term as president in a letter to a state run newspaper.

I don’t think anybody assumed that Fidel, who has been hospitalized for years, would ever resume power, but this is still momentous news. Castro, who has never been popular in Washington, has outlasted nine U.S. presidents. It’ll be interesting to see how all of our politicians responds to this news, as well as what the future holds for Cuba.

  1. Oh man, this totally legitimizes going after Saddam. Because clearly scary dictators that are apparently going to blow us up don’t just get old and fade away….oh wait.
