Obama would repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell”

Sen. Barack Obama recently told a gay magazine, The Advocate, that he wants to see the armed forces’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that holds that gays and lesbians are kicked out of the military if they disclose their sexuality. Obama had this to say about our military’s counterproductive measure:

We’re spending large sums of money to kick highly qualified gays or lesbians out of our military, some of whom possess specialties like Arab-language capabilities that we desperately need. That doesn’t make us more safe.

As of last summer, over 58 Arabic speakers had been kicked out of the military because of this policy, at a time when Arab-speaking servicemen are at a severe premium.

  1. This makes me so happy. Its absolute garbage that a group of American citizens aren’t allowed to defend their country.

It’s time to end 2nd class citizenship of the GLBT community. Equal rights for all.

Speaking of equal rights, I am still upset that neither Clinton or Obama has come out in favor of gay marriage, instead opting for the “separate but equal” civil unions. It’s unnerving that even the “progressive” mainstream still doesn’t recognized that rights of the GLBT are being trampled when full marriage rights are not in place.
