Overheard on the House floor today was a comment by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers saying,
We’re closing in on Rove. Someone’s got to kick his ass.
Conyers was asked later what the comment meant, Conyers said,
We want him for so many things, it’s hard to keep track.
Karl Rove is wanted by the committee to testify about his role in framing former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman for bribery (“America Has Politica Prisoners Too!”). Siegelman was beginning to have growing influence in the Democratic Party, being the first governor to endorse Al Gore in 2000 and was seen as a huge threat to Republicans in their turf of Alabama. The former governor was later released from prison following an appeal that raised questions about the case.
Rove has repeatedly ignored requests to appear before the Judiciary committee over this matter.
Conyers further said that Rove had a week to appear before the committee or,
We’ll do what any self-respecting committee would do. We’d hold him in contempt. Either that or go and have him arrested.
